Guide to PvP (For PvE'ers or Newer Players)

PvP is a part of WoW; even PvE’ers must suffer the trails of PvP for quest, legendries, and even weeklies.  So when I was asked for a PvE-Friendly Guide to PvP… Well, how could I say no?

The first thing to remember is that PvP isn’t a BAD thing.  In fact, it’s VERY fun!  But having an understanding will help you.

First off:  I want to point out that this guide is basics.  Things to help those who are new to PvP have the most basic understanding.  This won’t explain every BG but at least it’ll give you a better idea!

Understanding Roles:

Tanks:  Depending on the BG, your use will vary.   In some you can be used to hold a “boss” such as AV.  Others, the flag carrier, Warsong Gulch.  And outside of these, you’re perfect for defending positions.  Most tanks do decent damage but nothing compared to a dps, so always try to play to your skills as defense.

On a side note:  I highly recommend PvPing as a tank if you’re new to it.  You’re hard to kill, have decent AoE for when you’re swarmed, and it gives you an excuse to hang around and defend rather than zerg in a place you don’t know!

Healers:  An unforgiving task in PvP, you will be the first to get swarmed and are considered the biggest threat by any PvP'er worth their salt.  This being said, don’t try to kill.  Make yourself valuable by healing, buffing, and running with the group.  In some BGs you’ll find yourself useful in boss fights or by keeping flag carriers up, but mainly you’ll want to stay with a group of people and make sure they know you’re healing.  Even though a real PvP’er will kill you first, any team mate with a brain will want to keep you safe!  Defend or zerg as you prefer, but always keep an eye on your own health bar.

Side note:  AoE has a time and place.  If 6 people are being swarmed at a time, your AoE will be too weak to do ANY GOOD.  Better to save 3 then let all of them die.  Unlike PvE, there’s no tank to gather “adds”, this is a group of squishy tanks and you’re a solo heal.  That’s the mentality ya wanna keep.

DPS:  Kill.  Defend.  Zerg.  You do it all.  Your main goal is to protect any healers in range (assuming their actually healing and not dpsing), help get flags/cap bases, and even defend a point if needed.  If there is no tank to carry a flag, a non-clothie with speed boost should take it (Sorry mages)!  If something needs defending, make sure it looks defended!  Have bandages, mage food, and cookies at the ready.  In fact, play this like your questing:  that means CDs at the ready.

Know the BG

This is a given.  Have SOME idea to the BG you’re in.  Mainly, in the goal.  Do you need to get flags?  Protect a boss leader?  Defend bases?

Have some idea or you’ll be doing nothing but feeding mindlessly.

There are plenty of blogs (possibly soon even this one), that can help you.  Or you can just ask guildies.

As always, the golden rule is don’t be alone.

Be Ready for a Shit Storm

PvP is like trade chat.  People can be nice and helpful or they can be cold, stupid, and useless.  That means words worse the noob (and ALL its spellings) will fly.

Don’t follow the instructions either… There are always people that will “Think” they know what they’re doing and try to tell the group what to do.  Such as the moron who says “Zerg the boss” in AV, rather than taking down resources to weaken said boss…  This is also why you should have an idea before going in.

Don’t take offense to anything said, don’t comment back to them, and don’t get distracted by it.  There’s always 1 or 2 who sit and do nothing the whole time so they can bitch and troll the chat.  Report and move on.  99% of the time, reporting for language will work and really clean up your chat box!

Attempt to Gear

Currently, your gear gets scaled, but that’s not saying much!  You should still try to pick up abit of PvP gear with that honor your getting-especially if you’re going to be there for awhile.  It benefits you since it gets a higher ilvl rise and it helps the group since you can do more!

Don’t be a Loner

I always say this, but don’t go alone!  PvP is much more fun and safer when ya go with others.  Why?  You’re more likely to stay together, know each other’s play style, and ya got someone on your side during the shit storms that ensue when PvP'ers blame the PvE’ers for ruining their games.

Even I go with friends when given the chance.  We like to pick and defend during most BGs since we can coordinate.  Even when the group sucks, that 3-4 people looking after the flag can still keep the win.

Tips:

Lone players are easy prey, try to keep with 2-3 other people when defending or going for caps.

Protect the healers.  They heal!

CDs are your friend.  So are those healing pots/cookies/bandages/speed pots…

Think of BGs as if they were PuGs:  Assume no one has any idea, no food, no pots, no gear, just a troll or noob in the waiting.  This helps you keep a mentality that expects fail but pushes for the win.  It also helps you remember to stay out of Barren ch-I mean the BG chat!

Call INCs.  If you see someone sneaking into the base or heading for the cap-even if it’s well defended and it’s on the one-call it.  You never know when a stealth is right behind.

And that’s my advice!  I hope yall enjoy the blog and can put some of the info to use.
